Yesterday we celebrated our only grandson's birthday. Every family has traditions about celebrations. Birthdays can be very special or cause for tension and stress.
Early in my recovery in Al-Anon, we talked about birthdays we missed or felt sad about. I remember leaving that meeting and deciding to throw a special birthday party for myself that year.
I wanted to celebrate my 6th birthday in a different way than I remembered. I transformed my day by sending out invitations to my 6th birthday party. My request was to come dressed as desired for the occasion and prepared to play based on age 6. (This connects with the dysfunctional family rule about "it's not o.k. to play and have fun" and how you can Re-Create it in your life. Find out more about Family Rules in my book.)
My friends arrived for cake, ice cream, and fun and games. We pinned the tail on the donkey and played button, button, who's got the button. We all loved the party.
Today, I remember my 6th birthday fondly with lots of great friends. I have a lot of gratitude and appreciation for the support of my Al-Anon friends who helped me heal.
What are you grateful for in your healing?
Until next time,
Peace and happiness,
