Re-Create your Life
Build a new habit
Do something differently
Re-Create your Life
What is the theme behind these four phrases?
We'll come back to the theme in a minute...
Last week we reorganized the cupboard under the kitchen sink.
We moved the trash can from the right side to the left side.
No big deal, you say.
Just remember to open the left side door.
I find about once or twice a day
I open the left door first.
I make a conscious choice.
The rest of the time I open the right door,
remember the reorganization and open the
left door to put trash in the can.
What does this have to do with change, new habits,
doing something differently, or
Re-Creating your Life?
Each one requires conscious choice.
When you make a conscious choice to
Re-Create your Life,
you choose what you want to do differently.
You make a change and build a new habit.
It takes time to build an automatic response.
I'll let you know when I stop opening the right door first.
TJ Focus point:
Identify a habit you want to change--
I want to change my habit of ___________
I want to do it differently by ___________
to Re-Create my life through conscious choice.

Domestic Violence and Child Abuse: More student comments
Several students expressed concern about the lack of services.
Sarah Frazier asked: “Why is there such a lack of help (i.e., shelters) and support from the communities to be able to stop this epidemic?
Akia Calhoun learned “that domestic violence is a community problem and we have to start with prevention and education”.
Barbara Dean realized “something is being done to make changes.”
Kacy Leaver found “that everyone is affected by domestic violence and as a community we have to learn and donate more to the cause. Domestic violence and child abuse go hand in hand. We need to step up and volunteer and learn about both in order to make changes.”
There are many services available to domestic violence victims, child witness-victims, and perpetrators. However, these students make a very important point. The services available need more community involvement, more funds, and prevention education lags behind the need. This is true for all the human service areas. We can decrease child abuse and domestic violence victimization through prevention efforts.
Prevention education and early intervention do work. It takes money and people power to make it happen. You can help by contacting your child abuse or domestic violence services in your community. Learn all you can about available programs and the issues they address. Speak out in your community to make a difference by bringing issues to community leaders. Keep asking what else can be done and mobilize to make your community one where children and adults are protected from abuse and violence.

Questions about Domestic Violence related to Child Abuse
These questions came from the university students I spoke to about Domestic Violence. Before I share the question of the day, I want you to know these are questions I've heard many times. We have answers to some questions and are still searching for answers to others.
Halie Erdman asked "What are the characteristics of an abuser that you can recognize before getting into the relationship?" Halie, this is a great question everyone needs to know the answer before they start dating. We all know how easy it is to get so caught up in a new relationship that the rest of the people in our life take a back seat. Here's a good place to look for subtle signs of power and control.
Picture this: you and your new boyfriend don't want to be apart, even for a minute. At least that's how it seems. He tells you he doesn't want you spending time with anyone else, even your girlfriends or your family. Red Flag!!
Being overly possessive or jealous to the point of wanting you to move in with him or he wants to move in with you before the relationship has time to develop is a good time to take a step back and look at what's going on. Watch out if he starts telling you he loves you before he knows you. Love takes time to develop. Abusers take hostages because they can only keep up the nice guy front for a short period of time.
Pushing for sexual activity before you are ready is another way the abuser takes control. You have a right to say no or not yet. If your date or new friend continues to push, you push him away and run the other way as fast as you can.
Does your date or new friend push you to drink or take drugs even when you say no? Do you feel pressured to drink or drug more than you want? These are huge red flags about power and control. Substance abuse and domestic violence are closely connected.
Here's one that caught me up short. I was dating a man who was very possessive. He didn't like my daughter around because it interfered with his time controlling me. He started telling me how to spend my money on activities for her so she would be out of the house.
First, he wanted to control my relationship with my daughter. Second, he wanted to control how I spent my income. I threw him out!!
Take a good look at the power and control wheel. Are any of those happening in your relationship? Here's an example Domestic Violence Power and Control Wheel. Stop the relationship before it goes any further. The sooner you get out, the better.
Here's the hook to keep you involved--you see his potential or what he can possibly be if he would just (blank). You fill in the blank. Remember, he will only change if he wants to. You have no control over him. Most abusers won't change until they are forced, usually by the courts, to look at their problems. Then, they have to want to change or they just do their time.
Watch for more questions and answers.
Your TJ Tip for today:
Make a list of "want to have" in a relationship.
Make another list of "won't have" in a relationship.
Ask yourself if you are in a relationship with someone who meets most of your requirements for "want to have" or "won't have". What choice do you want to make for a good relationship for you?

University students respond--Some were SHOCKED!!
Remember last month, I told you I was asked to speak to 2 university classes.
Yesterday was the day I talked with them about Domestic Violence and the
link with Child Abuse.
Kristina Weiss said: "I did not know that so many people are being hurt, especially in such large numbers. What really shocked me was the fact that children all the way up to seniors are being abused!"
Halie Erdman commented: "That not only adult women are abused, that abuse affects everyone."
Ryann Frank echoes Halie: "Abuse happens in all age groups."
Sarah Frazier sees the crux of the problem: "We need to stop the problem at a local level before we can even think about preventing it at a national level."
A student who remained anonymous summarized the whole presentation: "Impact of abuse of partners on children. Even just arguing/verbal aggressiveness and what it does to the children."
And finally, another student remaining anonymous: "Partner abuse make children 1500 times more likely to be abused. It was useful to learn that you must work with the family and not just a child."
As future leaders, I was impressed with the students concerns....more about that next time.
Transformational Journaling is the system I used as a professional counselor with my clients to help them heal. It works with domestic violence victims, perpetrators, and children.
