Domestic Violence and Child Abuse: More student comments

Several students expressed concern about the lack of services.

Sarah Frazier asked: “Why is there such a lack of help (i.e., shelters) and support from the communities to be able to stop this epidemic?

Akia Calhoun learned “that domestic violence is a community problem and we have to start with prevention and education”.

Barbara Dean realized “something is being done to make changes.”

Kacy Leaver found “that everyone is affected by domestic violence and as a community we have to learn and donate more to the cause. Domestic violence and child abuse go hand in hand. We need to step up and volunteer and learn about both in order to make changes.”

There are many services available to domestic violence victims, child witness-victims, and perpetrators. However, these students make a very important point. The services available need more community involvement, more funds, and prevention education lags behind the need. This is true for all the human service areas. We can decrease child abuse and domestic violence victimization through prevention efforts.

Prevention education and early intervention do work. It takes money and people power to make it happen. You can help by contacting your child abuse or domestic violence services in your community. Learn all you can about available programs and the issues they address. Speak out in your community to make a difference by bringing issues to community leaders. Keep asking what else can be done and mobilize to make your community one where children and adults are protected from abuse and violence.
