Family Patterns
Understand how your family you grew up in passed on dysfunctional patterns through the multigenerational emotional process. Okay, I know that was a mouthful. Let me explain.
First, multigenerational means the patterns you learned which came down from parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and possibly further back.
Now, for the second part of that phrase “emotional process” means the feelings you are encouraged to express and the feelings no one wants to talk about. This also refers to your emotional development. In “From Darkness to Light: Your Inner Journey” you discover how to identify your dysfunctional family patterns and decide how you want to do them differently in the future.
What does “dysfunctional” mean? I know you’ve heard it many times. It means you are being, doing, feeling, thinking, and acting in unhealthy ways. Later in this chapter, you will have a chance to see how your family patterns were healthy or unhealthy. You will learn Transformational Journaling techniques to choose how you want to do, be, feel, think or act differently. There’s a picture in the eBook to help you understand dysfunctional and functional.
Family/Individual Development
Identifying the differences between functional and dysfunctional family systems requires a basic understanding of the developmental stages of each family member plus the developmental stages of the family. These two development processes are happening at the same time. They often lead to confusion, miscommunication, and misunderstanding in families. When you understand these processes, you are able to better manage the tasks of each stage.
Types Of Families That Produce Dysfunctional Behavior Patterns
You learn about the four types of family systems that produce dysfunctional adults. You identify your dysfunctional family patterns. You use Transformational Journaling “Focus Points” to determine how you can vary those patterns toward the healthy/functional patterns presented.
These behavior patterns follow what you learned as a child about your role in the family in order to survive. Adult children survive in life and DESPERATELY try to find out how to live life without the necessary tools to do so. Sound familiar?
Families Take Lots of Work
Contrary to popular belief, families are actually quite complicated. There are a lot of pieces to weave together. Just think about all the people you know and the differences in each of their families. Variety is certainly the spice of life when it comes to families.
Besides all those differences in families, you have all the individual members growing, developing, and having their own personalities. Add to the mix the personality of the family, the personality of the families the parents grew up in, and their ancestors. It’s sometimes amazing we all come out as good as we do.
But…add the additional dysfunctions of substance abuse/chemical dependency, childhood abuse/neglect, chronic physical or mental illness, and authoritarian families and you increase the potential for problems that can seem overwhelming.
